The Nation's second in command makes a stop in the Panhandle on Thursday.
Vice President Dick Cheney made a 15 minute speech to Republican supporters of Congressman Jeff Miller. Miller's running for re-election and Cheney was the headliner at a fundraiser luncheon in Fort Walton Beach.
Tickets to get in were $100 a piece and photo opportunities with the Vice President cost $1000 per person. Miller says the event raised more than $100,000 for not only his campaign but the Republican Party.
Miller says Republicans have a lot of ground to make up and they need your money to do it. "We have a lot of open seats that we will have to win as well as win back those seats that we lost in the November election so its critical. And it's not cheap to do that."
Much of Cheney's speech focused on the economy and the Iraq War. Cheney gave credit to Republicans and Miller for the stimulus package set to deliver billions of dollars in tax breaks over the coming weeks. Cheney also warned that a Democratic election in November would lead to tremendous increases in taxes.
Cheney spent time discussing security too. "One great lesson of 9/11 is that we have to stop treating terrorist attacks as a law enforcement problem," the Vice President said.
Cheney resolved that under his watch, America would stay in Iraq until the country was stable. Cheney elaborated on what he feels were mistakes in dealing with Afghanastan that eventually lead to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
One of the lighter moments in Cheney's speech was recounting how he met Mrs. Cheney. The Vice President credits his wedding to President Eisenhower saying that when he was elected in the 50's, his Dad, a government worker, was relocated to Wyoming. Cheney says he told his wife had Eisenhower not won they would not have moved and two would not have met. Mrs. Cheney replied that "She would have married someone else and some other guy would be Vice President."
For the small crowd that turned out to see the Vice President, it was a chance to be apart of History.
"There's only so many Vice Presidents so I thought the opportunity to come and meet him and have her picture taken would be a lot better than sitting in class today," said Charles Rigdon who brought his daughter Lauren to meet Cheney.
