Panama City, FL - When the jury comes to a verdict the NAACP wants to make sure the community is prepared regardless of the outcome.
The Bay County branch of the NAACP met this evening to discuss the Association's position if the defendants are found guilty, and also if they're found to be innocent. They say no matter what happens, they'll promote peace.
A room full of Bay County residents sat silently, watching the video from the boot camp the day Martin Lee Anderson collapsed. The NAACP says the video paints a vivid picture, and they believe it will be enough to bring about a guilty verdict.
"If you have children, just look at your children and then look at the video. It's not hard. It's not rocket science to figure out what's happening and what happened to the young man," said Bay County NAACP President Carolyn Mosley.
While they say it would be a great disappointment if the jurors come back with a verdict of not guilty, they want the community to know the NAACP will not stand behind a violent reaction.
"Whatever happens, we don't want any disturbance in our community because we all live here and we have to continue to live here," Mosley said.
Others agreed.
"We are too intelligent to allow ourselves to relegate our being to a level of violence. We will not destroy our community," insisted Pastor Russel Wright.
Right now the group is focused on the present and do not have plans to protest.
"We're going to wait for our citizens. They're our citizens on that jury. We're going to wait for them to make a decision and then we will go from there," said Mosley.
Branch leaders want parents to talk with their children, especially teenagers, about the case and the possible outcomes. They ask that you make sure your child knows violence is not the way to handle anger, and retaliation does not help anyone heal.
The NAACP says it will wait for the outcome of the trial before discussing the possibility of taking the case to the next level.
