Panama City, FL - Six people have reached a verdict deciding the fate of eight former Bay County boot camp employees today.

The jury delivered a verdict at 12:23 p.m.

Henry Dickens, Charles Enfinger, Patrick Garrett, Raymond Hauck, Charles Helms, Henry McFadden, Kristin Schmidt, and Joseph Walsh are charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child after the January 2006 death of a juvenile offender.

Martin Anderson, 14, died the day after he collapsed during exercises on his first day at the Bay County boot camp.  If convicted, the defendants face up to 30 years in prison.

A first autopsy by Bay County medical examiner Dr. Charles Siebert found Anderson died a natural death from complications of sickle cell trait, but Dr. Vernard Adams, the Hillsborough County medical examiner, performed a second autopsy and concluded Anderson died of suffocation at the hands of the defendants.

After court resumed at 9:00 a.m., Judge Michael Overstreet read the jury their instructions one last time.

The jury left the room around 9:40 a.m. to begin deliberations, and at 11:50 p.m. defense attorneys told News 13 a verdict was expected around 12:15 p.m.

Verdict

Henry Dickens - Not Guilty

Charles Enfinger - Not Guilty

Patrick Garrett - Not Guilty

Raymond Hauck - Not Guilty

Charles Helms - Not Guilty

Henry McFadden - Not Guilty

Kristin Schmidt - Not Guilty

Joseph Walsh - Not Guilty

Though nine people heard the entire case, only six were on the panel that will render the verdict.  The other three were alternates, who were dismissed after the reading of instructions.  One juror was released earlier this week after becoming ill.

The jury had the option of convicting any of the defendants on lesser charges of manslaughter, child neglect, or culpable negligence, or acquitting any or all of them.  The verdict must be unanimous.

The jurors are a 32-year-old white male business analyst, a 73-year-old white female homemaker, a 61-year-old white female retired teacher, a 63-year-old white female librarian, a 28-year-old white male maintenance worker.

Defendant Joseph Walsh, who had to be taken to the hospital Wednesday when he became ill during testimony, was not present Friday morning, but attorneys say he was watching the proceedings on a TV feed.
