Gulf Coast Medical center is using song and dance to get across a very important message about heart health. All of this is a part of national Wear Red Day, where attention is brought to a deadly disease in women.
"Heart disease is still the number one killer of women and men in the United States and continues to be a battle were working on everyday," said Nurse Summer Hoyt
Hospital staff got together to remind people of the symptoms of a heart attack with a special song and dance. Nurse Hoyt participated, and for her, heart health awareness is personal. It started with the death of her mother from a heart attack almost a decade ago.
"She was only having indigestion that wouldn't go away and back pain," Nurse Hoyt said. "When I moved back here I met my husband who at 37 had a triple bypass, and then myself, back in 2009, I experienced chest pain and I became a patient."
She uses that experience to help others stay heart healthy - from staying away from foods that are harmful, to recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack that are so often ignored.
"I think it's just a denial...people don't want to take the time to think that there's something wrong with them," Nurse Hoyt said. "I know as being a patient myself, it's hard to actually have the reality that there is something wrong and you have to now face it."
Something to keep in mind, so the next time you see red isn't the bright red sign of an emergency room.
