PSAT Telemarketing Scam Alert

Posted: Updated:

Here is a clarification on information contained in my Problem Solver report Monday night.  In that story, I told you about an apparent telemarketing scam and how a parent in Bay County had received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the College Board in Tallahassee.  She said the man was reportedly trying to sell study materials for the PSAT.  That test is administered to tenth graders in the fall.  When the parent questioned the caller, he reportedly hung up the phone.

The College Board says it receives occasional reports about phone scams of this nature seeking sensitive personal information, such as credit card and social security numbers.  The Board makes it clear; its web site has not been compromised.

The Bay County Sheriff's Office was also notified about the scam.  Investigators believe it is someone "spoofing" a phone number.  That means they can cause the correct number of an organization to register on a caller I-D even though that call was placed from a totally different phone.

The College Board says it does not make unsolicited phone calls.  If you receive suspicious calls of this nature, you can contact the College Board at 866-756-7346.
