Seven Fires Intentionally Set in Bay County

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters battled a series of woods fires in Northeast Bay County Saturday night, spurring an arson investigation.

State forestry officials suspect those seven fires were set intentionally.

Two fires were discovered off Old Tram Road, two off Nehi Road, one off Hope Valley Drive near Star Avenue and one off Bollinger Road near Deerpoint Dam.

Another fire off John Pitts Road was set across the street from two homes.

Brian Goddin of the Florida Forestry Service says the agency is investigating these fires to determine if they are related and says investigators discovered evidence at the scenes to assist in the arson investigation.

"Fortunately these fires that we believe were intentionally set were not set in the afternoon when the humidity is at its lowest…which means it's really dry...the winds were really rapid, for lack of a better word, this weekend. If so, it could have been a totally different outcome. The fire behavior under those conditions would have been a lot worse than when they were set last night," said Goddin.

Goddin also confirmed that three to four fires were intentionally set in Holmes County tonight.
