A housing complex less than a year old causes problems for some of its tenants. They are reaching out to News 13 for help. Details on what we have learned in this Problem Solver report.
Pinnacle at Hammock Square is located in Lynn Haven. If you have driven Highway 77 near Wal-Mart, you have probably seen the attractive apartments behind the Publix Shopping Center that opened last summer.
The developer says the complex was built with concrete block construction according to Florida Green Building Certification Standards. That means…it is air tight. And with colder temperatures this time of the year, the building can't breathe and there is a build up of moisture.
One resident who did not want to be identified told News 13, "I started deep cleaning moving stuff and noticed green fuzzy. I noticed it in one area and I was like…oh." She continued to describe how the environment in her apartment changed about three weeks ago. She says, "it is nasty to live with mold. It is not clean…it is unhealthy and I just feel like they should have us somewhere else until the problem is taken care of." The tenant showed me pictures of what she says is mold that had collected on some of her furniture.
Property management responded to her complaints by doing some clean up of effected items and by bringing in a dehumidifier. Tenants were advised to set their thermostats at a cooler level to control the potential for mold. Another resident sent me pictures of mold in her apartment. She moved out after six months.
There are similar complaints voiced by other tenants who live at Pinnacle at Hammock Square. Some of them say they still like living in the complex…they are just concerned about these issues that have come up. The big question is what is the company doing about it?
A top official of the Pinnacle Housing Group says he along with an assessment team, was on site in Lynn Haven last week. According to Timothy Wheat, Pinnacle Housing Regional Vice President, "We did a thorough inspection of the units the other day. Ones that were too humid we brought back into balance. You have got a stable interior environment when humidity goes up and up and the air conditioner is not on…so the air is not circulating or, if the resident is not running the mechanical system at all or not turning on the ceiling fans we provide in each unit you may get stagnate air. It is advisable for you to open a window twice a day five to ten minutes to allow for a fresh air exchange."
Timothy Wheat says there were no issues found with construction of the complex. He says the company will continue to respond to resident complaints and, says Pinnacle Housing is committed to providing residents a great living environment.
