The Bay District School Board gives the rubber stamp for the Bay Haven Charter Academy to increase enrollment by 15%, but not without a dispute. One school board member had concerns with the charter school's demographics.
State law requires the district to give Bay Haven the green light to increase enrollment. Littleton wanted to pass the increase, but only if Bay Haven's charter was reworded to require an increase in low performing students and students with disabilities. Littleton argued data shows the inequities between the charter academy and other neighboring schools. She says the change in the charter will help facilitate bay haven to bring up its number of exceptional students. However, with a 3-to-2 vote...her proposal was voted down.
"If it was such a great idea, I would have loved to get Mrs. Littleton's motion and her plan a little bit earlier so I would have got it done my homework on it digested it really take a look at it except at the last second saying, ‘Here's my plan lets take a look at this'," said Bay District School Board Member Steve Moss, who voted it down.
"I think having Bay Haven really address the issue in an aggressive manner really would be a helpful thing for all of us, but they chose not to do that and I respect that. I'm one of a team of five so I'm okay with losing, I am a big girl, I am not happy about it but I will suck it up," Littleton said.
With a 4-to-1 vote, Littleton saying no, the board went ahead and passed for Bay Haven to increase it's enrollment without any stipulations.
