Some say it takes skill and determination to bring robots to life. Several students at Mosley High School are hoping their skills are good enough for an upcoming competition.
The Holy Cat Box of Terror, rightfully named by its creators, is a lean, mean, shooting machine. Several students at Mosley High School teamed up to design this robot to enter into the FIRST Regional Robotics Competition in Orlando.
"We got a letter in the mail addressed to the physics department and I just kind of read it in my class one day and asked do you want to do this and they said yea let's do it." Katrina Mcalpin, Physics teacher says.
With more than 64 teams on board, the competition asks students to create a robot that can shoot basketballs into target hoops.
The arm picks up the ball, swings it around the shoot and once the basketball is in the firing position, team members hit the trigger from afar and then the wheels blast it in the air.
"It was a pretty tough concept, it's one of those hard things to figure out, but it seems like we've got it down." John Pierce says.
Putting more than 60 hours of work a piece and a number of afternoons in the lab, Team Tidy Cats has got it down packed.
The design of the robot plays a pivotal role in the competition, but so does team work. "It's more than just playing a game there, it's really about community. You go and people help you. All the other teams, even though they're your competition, they are so willing to help." Mcalpin says.
With hand and hearts combined the team hopes that drive and determination lead them to a win.
The team is asking for your help to get to regionals. If you would like to help, email Katrina Mcalpin at mcalpkl@bay.k12.fl.us
