According to our radio partner WZEP, the DeFuniak Springs Police made an arrest after an individual was stopped on Highway 20 in the Portland area. The Police made the arrest after a suspect driving a blue pickup truck fled the scene of an attempted traffic stop in the city.
The suspect allegedly tried to run into two officer's vehicles and raced down 19th Street to Bob Sikes Road. The chase turned onto Pleasant Ridge Road and eventually went across Eglin Reservation on the Site C-6 road. With the Walton County Sheriff's Office joining to help block roads, the truck ended up on the north shoulder of Highway 20, just east of the Portland Community Center. The suspect fled on foot and was captured.
Walton EMS were called to check on two individuals, the driver and a female passenger. Neither were transported for medical.
The suspect is charged with Drug Possession, Eluding Officers and other charges. The Female passenger has been charged with possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
While the stop and arrest was made outside the DeFuniak Springs Police jurisdiction, the law allows an officer to continue a pursuit, even across state lines as long as it continues. Captain Lolley, with the DeFuniak Springs Police says this is termed a Fresh Pursuit.
