There are new developments out of Washington, as an important bill heads to the senate. It is apparent that U.S. Representative Steve Southerland and other gulf coast lawmakers helped pass the RESTORE Act in the House.
Lawmakers breathed a sign of relief Thursday night when the amendment passed. The amendment is crucial because it requires the government to set aside BP fines for effected states. As it stood before-- the money would have gone into the general fund. But-- there were concerns the government could have benefited from the disaster.
"That means protection and long term research. That means jobs… that means repairing from where we were, not putting this money into the general trust fund and that money being applied to debt or pork barrel projects all over the country." Bill Williams, Florida Association of Counties President-Elect says.
Last week Williams and other gulf coast officials went to Washington to lobby for the change. A similar measure is now working its way through the senate.
