The Bay County Sheriff's Office was contacted recently by a concerned citizen regarding a letter in the mail he recently received that could be a scam.
The letter contains what appear to a voucher for airline tickets with the name of a legitimate commercial airline printed on the "ticket". There is a telephone number on the documents with a request for the recipient to call and claim two round trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental US from any major international US airport. When the phone call is made, the person that answers the phone first screens the caller, stating that to participate in the giveaway the caller must be employed, be in a certain income bracket, and be willing to schedule a 90 minute meeting in Panama City at a local hotel and bring their spouse and a major credit card.
Anyone who receives this letter is cautioned against sharing personal information with any company they are not familiar with, especially one from out of town that will be in the area only a short time. The phone number on these documents has been linked to other well known scams that offer different prizes and incentives but all require the recipient or "winner" to attend a meeting to qualify for the "prize".
Anyone who feels they have been victimized by any scam is urged to file a complaint with the Bay County Sheriff's Office.
