Test Driving 'daVinci'

Seaside, Fla -

A new surgery option has made it's way to Gulf Coast Medical Center, and Tuesday the public got a chance to get their hands on the new technology.

"Intuitive Surgery out of California actually makes the 'daVinci' robot, and were lucky enough here at Gulf Coast Medical Center to have two," said hospital employee Jennifer Carter

Tuesday, the hospital had an open house for 'daVinci' at the Seaside neighborhood school, giving kids an opportunity to take a look at the future.

"At first it was a little hard and then it got really easy, but it's still really fun," said 8-year-old Will Carter.

"I think it's really cool because you can look on a big screen and see what you're doing," said Will's sister Reese Carter.

Kids were excited for the opportunity to check out the million dollar medical marvel, and so were adults.

"You can see that it can't be too difficult to work with," said South Walton resident Joan Luchese. "It makes me feel more comfortable about robotic surgery."

Carter says the machine provides several benefits over traditional surgery.

"One of the benefits of daVinci is that the surgeon can control 3 arms and the camera," Carter said.

"It's such a precise way of doing surgery, so much better for the patient as far as recovery time," said Dr. Justo Maqueria, a Gulf Coast OBGYN. "It cuts recovery time by half."

Dr. Maqueria says in his line of work, open surgery is a thing of the past.

"It's absurd to open up a patient for a hysterectomy when you can open up the patient robotically and go home the same day," Dr. Maqueria said.

With its multi-function arms, 3-D Vision, camera, and it's overall cool factor, don't be surprised if the next time you go under the knife at Gulf Coast Medical Center, daVinci is waiting for you at the operating table.
