
A Bay County organization is trying to dispel myths about mental disabilities, one special event at a time.
In honor of mental health month, the STARR center hosted it annual "STARR Fest" at Sharon Sheffield Park in Lynn Haven.
STAEE is the acronym for "Support, Trust, Activities, Relationships, and respect. Saturdays party included live music, games for the kids, and a silent auction to raise funds. The program director says perceptions of mental illness are often wrong.
"The mentally ill are people just like Just like us They're not dangerous They don't do bad things You hear one isolated incident Everybody believe Anybody with a mental illnesses Is dangerous and harmful They're not in there people with Pride and respect I just want to be Treated just like everybody else".
The STARR center is a non-profit organization open to its members five days a week.
