If the beaches of South Walton are your idea of the perfect getaway, you might be happy to know they are staying even cleaner with the recent installation of solar powered trash compactors.
These devices can hold 5 times more than a standard container.
You can find them at six of the eight regional beach accesses.
They were purchased for use by "Visit South Walton". Marketing Director, Jon Ervin, says the containers are equipped with sensors that trigger the compactor to flatten contents when the unit is full and to send a wireless signal when the can is ready to be picked up.
Ervin added that the cans have been quite the attraction since they showed up.
"[It] turned out to be a bit of an attraction. People would actually look for trash so they could watch the compaction. We should have sold tickets to the beta test," added Ervin.
In addition to units purchased by "Visit South Walton", four additional solar-powered compactors were donated by Waste Management for use in Walton County.
