Panama City, Fla. -
A new non-invasive treatment for skin cancer called Superficial Radiotherapy or SRT reduces recovery time and scarring.
Tom McCoy went through a round of SRT treatments at Gulf Coast Dermatology and says he can see a big difference as far as scarring compared to traditional surgical treatments.
Dermatologist Dr. Jon Ward says, "It offers many advantages to traditional skin cancer treatment. There's no pain, no needles, many cases...a nice, cosmetic outcome as well."
McCoy explains, "There's absolutely no pain, nothing, the recovery is...there's no recovery."
Dr. Ward says SRT damages rapidly dividing cells, which is what cancer cells do.
"It's an x-ray that rather than having a millisecond of exposure, you have 30, 60, 90 seconds depending on the dose and x-rays are radiation," he explains.
SRT is not used for melanoma and it does require 8 to 12 treatments.
Dr. Ward says Gulf Coast Dermatology has been using SRT since last year, and they've treated more than 100 patients so far.
