Tips to Help Find a Moving Company

Posted: Updated:

Thirty seven million Americans move each year according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  But, if you are planning to hit the road, there are some things to keep in mind to avoid scams.  Some tips to remember in this News 13 Problem Solver report.

Even in the best of circumstances moving is quite an experience.  It can be pretty involved with packing up your belongings loading up the truck and then starting out for a new location.  Your furniture and other personal items may have to go in storage for a while depending on the situation.

The Better Business Bureau advises to do your homework if you decide to select a moving company.  The BBB can help you check company reviews.  You may want to find at least three companies to consider.

Here are some guidelines from the Better Business Bureau to follow:

  • Interstate movers are required to be licensed by the federal government.  You can verify the license at protectyourmove.gov.  That is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's web site.
  • Ask potential moving companies for references and call them.
  • You might visit the moving business' office and inspect their moving trucks.
  • Since people are coming to your home that you probably don't know, ask how they perform background checks on all their employees.
  • Have each potential mover to make an in-home estimate.  According to the BBB, if a moving business claims to charge by the cubic foot, it is likely a scam.
  • Once you have chosen a moving business, get a contract detailing all expenses and what is expected of the movers.

Something else to remember.  When you create the contract, ask about the company's claims process in case something breaks or is lost.  People you want to do business with have a solid claims process.
