Patients requiring knee replacements often dread the surgery and recovery. A new technology called a custom fit knee replacement is less invasive than traditional knee replacements.
Patient Frank Day had a custom fit knee replacement one month ago for rheumatoid arthritis.
He says, "The level of pain has reduced. I've got my mobility back and my life for that matter."
It works by patients first getting an MRI and X-rays.
Dr. Chad Mitchell from Southern Orthopedic Specialists explains, "Based on computer modeling they create and manufacture a cutting block based on those images, so when we get to surgery it fits perfectly onto the patient's knee specific to the deformities present in the knee."
Dr. Mitchell says the technique required for traditional knee replacements can increase the amount of bleeding and pulmonary embolisms.
"With this new technology, we avoid that. We have less blood loss and decrease the risk of pulmonary embolism," Dr. Mitchell says.
Day had a traditional knee replacement many years ago and says he can tell a difference in his mobility with the custom fit knee replacement.
