Gail Smith

My name is Gail Smith and I am seeking election to the Walton County School Board, District #1 in the August 14th election. I was hired as Principal of Bay Elementary School in 1996. The following year I coordinated the relocation of the school, students and staff, to Van R. Butler Elementary School. Butler earned and maintained the school grade of "A" under my leadership. I served as Principal of Emerald Coast Middle School for three years. During my 3 years at ECMS, the school grade of "A" was maintained.  I retired in 2011 as Principal at ECMS, which culminated for me 37 successful years as an educator and school administrator. All 37 years of my career were served in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. My extensive experience as teacher, administrator and principal has provided me with an intimate knowledge of school financial matters, including budgeting, grants, federal aid programs, employment and staffing requirements as well as labor management relations and training. I am familiar with lunchroom management, transportation, sports activities, construction and the myriad of related issues that teachers and administrators must deal with on daily basis. Because of this, my learning curve as a new school board member will be short, as my entire working life has been spent doing the very work that the school board oversees. I have received various awards and recognition over the years including the Principal Achievement Award for outstanding leadership in Walton County in 2001 and again in 2005. My undergraduate work was in elementary education and my two graduate degrees were in educational leadership and early childhood development. All three degrees were earned at UWF.

I believe that it is critical to have an educator/administrator on the school board. Expressing the educator/administrator's perspective when making serious decisions regarding our school system and our students' education will assist the board in creating quality, realistic policies.

I believe in being fiscally responsible and mindful of today's economy. My input regarding budgetary decisions will not only have the voice of experience but will also have the knowledge which comes from years of successful management of school finances.

I believe that all children can learn and should be academically challenged. Every effort should be made to ensure class work and available course offerings set high standards for students and require optimal student performance. Our students must be prepared to reach their goals of higher education and/or competitive employment. That being said, we must provide the tools and resources that our teachers need to create a challenging and creative learning environment.

I would appreciate your support and need your vote on August 14, 2012. Gail Smith, Candidate for School Board, District 1.
