Health Advisory Expands To Gulf County Beach

Posted: Updated:

The health advisory issued after untreated sewage leaked into the gulf in Bay County has been expanded to neighboring Gulf County.

On Saturday, the Gulf County Health Department included St. Joe Beach in the "no swimming" advisory until further notice.

Last weekend, an estimated 38,000 gallons of sewage flowed into the 8th Street Canal after a power failure at a sanitary lift station in Mexico Beach.  The sewage eventually made its way into the Gulf of Mexico.

After water samples revealed a high level of fecal contamination, the Bay County Health Department advised against swimming along a one mile stretch of beach.

More water tests are planned.
