The search continues for a distressed swimmer that went missing off Panama City Beach on Monday afternoon.
It happened just behind the Days Inn on Front Beach Road near beach access 48. According to Panama City beach Police, 19-year-old Mario Waldrop of New Albany, Mississippi was swimming in the Gulf and became distressed.
Waldrop's cousins, 24-year-old Tay Elliot and 23-year-old Vasonique Thompson attempted to rescue him and also became distressed. A bystander rescued Thompson and Waldrop but couldn't reach Elliot.
Elliot was last seen approximately 100 yards from the beach, that's when the Bay County Sheriff's Office and the United States Coast Guard was called in and assisted. Panama City Beach Beach & Surf Patrol and Fire were first on scene.
By 10 PM on Monday evening, Elliot had not been located. Police say they anticipate that the Coast Guard will continue their search in the morning.
