Panama City Beach Council Discusses 2013 Budget

Posted: Updated:

On Panama City Beach, the City Council is having budget talks. The workshop broke down proposals by department. Beach Council members are working to set a final budget for 2013.

The Beach City Council heard from department heads across the board, from law enforcement to the library.

In order to cut initial expenditures, each department was asked to make 3.5 percent concessions of their choosing.

Following his first spring break as Panama City Beach Police Chief, Drew Whitman, submitted a smaller budget than years past, but still made sure to increase overtime hours for full time officers as well as the budget for auxiliary reserves and mutual aid from the Sheriff's office during busy times like spring break.

Administrative costs that determine salaries, benefits and travel expenditures for the council are down by about 8 percent according to City Clerk, Hillary White.

The last significant discussion surrounded the trolley transportation system, which seeks a 35 percent increase for the next fiscal year. This was not added to the initial overall budget for the city and further discussion is required from the council surrounding this issue.
