Feeling the sting and the bite of a mosquito can be painful and annoying but it could also leave you with the West Nile Virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control the virus is seen mostly during the summer and the fall with symptoms ranging from body aches to vomiting. This year there have been 693 cases of WNV reported in the United States, resulting in 26 fatalities. Laura McKinney, Public Health Services Manager of the Bay County Health Department says we can prevent mosquito bites and WNV by dressing appropriately from dusk until dawn, removing standing water from around our homes, and using EPA approved insect repellents.
