Bay County commissioners have agreed to try to negotiate a settlement with Washington County over water rights. During their Tuesday meeting, commissioners met in executive session and authorized County Attorney Terrell Arline to attempt to reach an agreement.
In 2010, the Northwest Florida Water Management District announced plans to approve a well field in the Sand Hill Lakes area of Bay County for use in case of a water emergency. But the Knight family, which owns tens of thousands of acres near the proposed site, joined forces with Washington County to oppose the plan on the grounds that it would dry up their reservoirs.
On July 26, a judge recommended that the water district deny Bay County's request. As a result of that ruling, commissioners agreed to try to work out a deal with the Washington County group.
Arline said details of the negotiations could be released later this week.
