A Vernon man in the center of a drug smuggling ring was sentenced on Thursday in federal court.
United States Attorney Pamela Marsh says 71-year-old Rufus Daniel Currington, Jr. of Vernon was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a large scale marijuana trafficking organization.
Currington admitted to his role back in July. He told the courts he had received four to five tons of marijuana from a Mexican drug trafficking organization since August of 2009.
Currington and his accomplices stored large amounts of the drug in and around Vernon, some of which was distributed in Bay and Washington counties.
