The Sea Dragon made it's arrival known shooting off cannons as it came ashore to the City Pier on Panama City Beach Saturday afternoon. A band of pirates then made their way onto land where they headed to Pier Park and captured Mayor Gayle Oberst and the keys to the city.
But with the help of Captain Jack Sparrow and other fellow pirates, they battled the bullying pirates and the city was saved.
"Who wouldn't want our beach?" asks Mayor Gayle Oberst when I asked her why she thought the pirates picked Panama City Beach to invade. "It's a beautiful place to live and its a great place to visit and we do have wonderful treasures," says Oberst.
However, those treasures get buried during the off season in Panama City Beach…leading the city to hold pirate fest. "It's a slower time so it's to bring people down and to give people who live here a good time," says Oberst.
Panama City Beach resident Gwen Berry won second place in the costume contest and says being a pirate for the weekend is the most fun she's ever had in the city.
This was the second year for Pirates of the High Seas Festival. Mayor Oberst says many more people came out this time and estimates the turnout to be in the thousands.
