The 2012 Ironman triathlon took place Saturday in Bay County. Over 3000 athletes took part in the 140.6 mile triathlon. Andrew Starykowicz was the top male finisher finishing in 8:06:17. After the race, at a loss for words about his win in just his second Ironman ever.
"Like any race, you have good times, you have bad times," says Starykowicz. "You just get through the bad times, and thrive on the good times. I was in a lot of trouble, but I kept faith in myself, and my training, and all those who support me. So much goes through your mind in a race like this. So many people screaming for you. It kept you motivated, it kept the adrenaline pumping. It's a dream come true."
Yvonne Van Vlerken finishing first for the women, clocking in a time of 8:51:35, and says she really proved herself today.
"In the front, we are all very talented. We all have the best bike, the best coaches, and we're just all good. Of course it's hard. Ironman always hurts, everybody has pain. We just have to go through it, and accept it, and prepare yourself for it."
Van Vlerken's birthday is November 5th, and says winning today makes this year the best birthday ever.
