While the physical cleanup is over for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the financial one continues. On top of claims and fines, BP is backing a 43.6 million dollar Gulf Tourism and Seafood Promotional Fund specifically aimed at projects promoting the seafood industry and tourism.
Deepwater Horizon Claims Administrator Patrick A. Juneau announced Wednesday 110 agencies total from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi will receive that grant.
More than 13 million dollars will go to 33 different agencies in Florida, two of them from Bay County: the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Improvement Board.
"I'm really excited about it. It's basically that we are going to promote downtown and Panama City," says Dutch Sanger, executive director of the Downtown Improvement Board. "We really want to try and bring to life the off-season right now and bring more people down town."
The Beach Chamber plans to use the money for the 2013 Seafood and Music Festival.
"It really took a toll on our local beaches our business and hopefully this money can be put back into restoring our image in visitors minds, putting heads in beds re-branding ourselves," says Lauren Williams with the Chamber.
The individual amount per agency has not yet been announced.
