Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Manslaughter

Posted: Updated:

Circuit Judge William Wright sentenced Shaquille Maurice Pittman on Friday to 20 years in prison after Pittman pleaded no contest to manslaughter with a firearm and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon.

Pittman shot to death Lynwood Alvin Coleman, 53, April 29, 2011, in Coleman's home at 2915 Orange St., Marianna, during an attempted robbery. Pittman ran from the scene, but was identified through witnesses and physical evidence. He was arrested July 8, 2011, and later indicted of first-degree murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.

Assistant State Attorney Larry Basford had been in Marianna this week preparing Coleman's case for trial that was scheduled for the week of Nov. 26. Coleman decided to plea instead of facing a jury and a possible life sentence. Wright sentenced Pittman to 20 years in prison for the manslaughter charge and 15 years in prison for attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, and ordered both penalties to run concurrently.
