Bay County commissioners selected Collins & Associates as the architect for the $13.7 million expansion and renovation of the courthouse.
The firm was one of six that bid on the project and will be paid $1,009,660 for the design phase.
Commissioner George Gainer, who serves on the Steering Committee, said improvements to the courthouse are long overdue. "It's another part of the infrastructure that this commission has paid a lot of attention to… like our government center [and] our library," said Gainer. "We've done a lot of things that people can go by and look at and they can see their money... they can see what this commission has done."
Gainer said the design phase will take about six months to complete. The project will be funded with fines and fees collected through courthouse operations; no taxpayer funds will be used.
