Prescribed Burns Planned for St. Andrews State Park

Posted: Updated:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's St. Andrews State Park, located in Panama City Beach, will conduct prescribed burns in St. Andrews State Park.

The DEP will hold the burns from December 9 through December 15, 2012, weather permitting.

One prescribed burn will consist of approximately 6 acres from the northwestern boundary of the park in and around Pine Grove campground. Prescribed fires are only conducted when weather parameters are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily, after reviewing the Predicted Fire Weather forecast for that particular day and in coordination with local Florida Forest Service fire officials.

The other will consist of approximately 25 acres within the northeastern boundary of the park, east of the boat launch and boat launch parking lot. Prescribed fires are only conducted when weather parameters are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily, after reviewing the Predicted Fire Weather forecast for that particular day and in coordination with local Florida Forest Service fire officials.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire regimes that promote healthy plant and animal communities. Prescribed burning also increases biodiversity, reduces the chances of uncontrolled wildfires by removing and reducing undergrowth and dangerous heavy fuel build-up, helps manage invasive exotic plant species, and helps restore natural landscapes to their original, natural state.
