Rutherford's John Lee- Scholar Athlete of the Week

Staying undefeated in any sport is tough to do, but when you're in a sport like wrestling where your own hard work and dedication correlates directly to your performance, it's even more of an accomplishment to stay perfect. That's exactly where Rutherford Senior John Lee is at- undefeated. 7-0. That's John's record so far this season, and that perfection is no fluke.

"It just feels great that your hard work actually pays off," says John. "Working hard in the offseason has a big reward."

But John's offseason is really non-existent, as he starts each school year playing football, then transitions to wrestling, then weightlifting and track and field.

"I coach John in three of the four sports you just talked about," says Coach Anthony Collier. "I've been blessed to have that type of kid be a part of my life everyday."

"For wrestling I love it because I get to go out there and work hard and win, and for football I get to hit people," laughs John.

All that winning and hitting has earned John quite the accolades- bringing in All-County and All-District honors this season on the football field, and last year on the mats, John was not only County and District champion, but was a Regional qualifier- falling just a win short of making it to state.

"It's definitely motivated my to work hard in the offseason and get ready," says John. "I'm looking forward to getting a good shot and going to state. Anything short of that I'd be disappointed."

"I'm not the type of coach to predict, but I see him doing quite well in the state competition this year," says Coach Collier.

John's not just doing well on the mats- he's also doing well in the classroom, sporting a 3.2 GPA taking AP and IB classes- but even more impressive? In his Senior year- John's maintaining straight A's.

"I believe you got to finish strong no matter what you do," says John. "Finishing strong is the best thing."

"He just makes everybody in the room better," says Coach Collier. "John's going to always work. He sets a work ethic that's bar none one of the best work ethics I've seen. When the other kids may want to take the day off, John's not going to let them. He's going to motivate them and get them going."

"If I'm slacking, then the whole room is going to follow," says John. "I got to make sure I come to work everyday."

Everyday- and everyday working to staying perfect. John recently received a Congressional nomination from Representative Steve Southerland to attend the US Merchant Marine Academy, where he says it's an honor to have the opportunity to serve our Country.
