With the deadline to apply quickly approaching, Panama City is getting closer to selecting the next police chief. Former Police Chief John Van Etten retired back in October of last year.
After more than 28 years with the Panama City Police Department, Chief John Van Etten retired from the force. Scott Ervin, who was deputy chief under Van Etten, is the current acting chief until a new one is hired.
According to City Manager Ken Hammons, there are 11 candidates from at least 6 different states. The only local candidate is Scott Ervin.
With the application deadline approaching on January 7th, Hammons says he is looking for a candidate who plans to stay in the position for a while, so selecting the person for the job is something Hammons says he will not rush.
"If we have two or three well represented applications or resumes that come, then we will spend the necessary time to make the best selection for this city and our citizens," says Hammons.
The City Manager makes the ultimate decision on who to hire.
