Online art retailer, Cureeo.com aims to make the market more transparent by categorizing all artwork for sale on the website on a 1 to 100 scale. The company launched the ‘Buyer’s Guide,’ to help both new and experienced collectors navigate the complex world of contemporary art buying.
“Assessing the value of original art is just plain difficult for most people – young, old, male, female. And it’s holding back the market,” says Cureeo Founder and CEO, Maida Swenson-Fortune. “By our count, as many as 84% of people would like to own more art than they do, but they just can’t quite get over the question of, ‘Is it worth it?’”
To determine the ratings, each piece of art selected to appear on Cureeo begins with a minimum quality threshold. After a thorough assessment, the final number is based on factors such as artists’ exhibition and collection history, as well as the materials, edition number and composition of each piece. While such criteria are always used to assess and appraise original artwork, this is the first time customers have full transparency into those dynamics. Similar to Robert Parker’s wine ratings, the Buyer’s Guide provided by Cureeo aims to give customers the information and vocabulary necessary to feel comfortable buying an unfamiliar product.
Executives at Cureeo believe that providing this level of detail is a much-needed innovation. Swenson-Fortune concludes her blog post to customers saying, “We believe an objective analysis and clear explanation sure beats the “artspeak” that often leaves many buyers confused and frustrated.”
Before launching the Buyer's Guide, Cureeo spent months researching the critical elements that would reflect the collect-ability of each piece, speaking with artists, curators of major museums, well-known collectors, professors and critics. The company is eager to bring art education to all levels of collectors, and is excited to open up a dialogue in which everyone can participate.
