Standoff Continues in Dale County, AL

Here is the latest information on the standoff in Dale County, AL, as released by the Dale County Sheriff's Department.

Update 7:30 a.m.

Efforts to bring this ongoing incident to a close have continued through the night. At this time law enforcement has extended the evacuation area to ensure the safety of those living in the immediate area. The Dale County Sheriffs Department has confirmed the identity of the victim as 66 year old Charles Albert Poland Junior. Mr. Poland was employed by Dale County Board of Education in 2009 as a Bus Driver. Mr. Poland was acting in his official duties yesterday when fatally shot. The Dale County Board of Education and Dale County Sheriff's Department would like to offer our deepest condolences to the Poland Family.

Original Release 6:21 p.m.

The Dale County Sheriff's Department has established a command post location at the intersection of 231 North and Private Road 1539 in Dale County, Alabama following a shooting. Multiple agencies are present assisting with the incident. Authorities say a call was received regarding a shooting involving a Dale County School Bus at 3:36 p.m.

At this time limited details are being released however the Sheriff's Department has confirmed one adult male was shot and the suspect is not in custody. Further details will be released as they become available.

School System Authorities have confirmed that all Dale County and Ozark City Schools will be closed on Wednesday January 30, 2013.

Multiple agencies remain on scene and are working diligently. No further updates are available at this time.

10:00 p.m.

Due to the sensitive nature of the open and ongoing incident, limited details are being released at this time however authorities have now confirmed one fatality and also confirmed evacuations were conducted shortly after law enforcement arrived on scene. These evacuations have affected residents in the immediate area and were conducted as a precautionary measure as public safety remains paramount in this situation. Authorities also confirmed the presence of a child at the scene but are giving no further information at this time.

At this time there are no further updates and none expected for some time. The Dale County Sheriff's Office along with assisting agencies remain on scene and will continue to work diligently through the night in an effort to bring closure to this incident as quickly as possible.
