Middle School Students Go Head to Head in Math

Posted: Updated:

Do you know what is 12u squared when u= 3? I don't either, but some kids at Gulf Coast State College on Saturday probably did.

More than 150 students were there for the Gulf Coast Chapter's "Math Counts." for the past thirty years, the nation's 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have competed head to head, to find the top performers in geometry, algebra, and other forms of math

Chairman Arthur Hooks taught math for eight years, and he loves the look in kids' eyes when they finally get it

"It's just nice to see that kids have a spark, so when they see that they get it, their eyes come on. With some of us we try to get the engineers to get into the class rooms with them, maybe through mentoring, and this is just another avenue that this can occur," says Hooks.

By the way, the answer to that math problem? When u equals three twelve u squared is 108.
