A Panama City man is in critical condition after he and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper were struck by a car during a traffic stop.
It happened just after 11 p.m. Friday night on U.S. Highway 98 near Sandestin Boulevard in Walton County.
According to the FHP, Patrolman Lester Abreu was conducting a field sobriety test on Eddy Hardy, who had been involved in an earlier crash at that location. Abreu and Hardy were injured when another motorist came upon the scene and slammed into the rear of the FHP patrol car, which then struck the two men.
The driver of the second vehicle, Raul Silvas of Niceville, was charged with DUI, driving with a suspended/revoked license and failure to use due care. Silvas, 34, was booked into the Walton County jail.
Hardy, 41, was taken by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola with critical injuries. Trooper Abreu was treated and released at Sacred Heart Hospital in Sandestin.
