Free Diabetes Risk Screening set for Feb. 23

Posted: Updated:

It only takes 15 minutes to find out if you have, or are at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  If caught early enough, you may be able to avoid or delay developing the disease.  The Diversity Action Team of the Community Health Task Force is offering Bay County, Know Your Numbers! a free county-wide Diabetes Risk Screening event on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Diabetes risk screenings will be offered at eight locations throughout Bay County from 10am-2pm that day. No appointment is necessary; just stop by any of the following locations:

  • Panama City Mall
  • Bay County Public Library on 11th Street
  • Mullins Pharmacy in Lynn Haven
  • Grand Lagoon Farmer's Market in Panama City Beach
  • Panama City Beach Public Library
  • 3203 Fitness Center in Springfield
  • Tyndall Air Force Base BX
  • Rainbow Food Store in Youngstown

Approximately 35% of Bay County residents have prediabetes, but they don't know it.  Identifying those with prediabetes and intervening with lifestyle changes and possibly medication can prevent diabetes according to the National Institutes of Health. "To prevent diabetes, we have to identify those at risk and those with prediabetes. This screening initiative is one-step toward creating a healthier, better informed community," said Jo Colville, Certified Diabetes Educator with Bay Medical Center/Sacred Heart Health Systems and chair of the Diabesity Action Team.
