UPDATE from the Bay County Sheriff's Office ... The Bay County Sheriff's Office responded to a call this morning at about 9:15 a.m. in reference to a shooting.

Deputies arrived at a home on Comet Avenue in Callaway to discover 18 year old Emily Allen shot in the head. It appeared the bullet entered the forehead and exited the top of the head. EMS responded to the scene. Allen was alert and talking as she was taken to a local hospital.

Subsequent investigation revealed that a 3 year old child in the home had spilled something on the bed sheets that morning and the bed had been stripped so all sheets and blankets could be washed. It is believed that at that time the 3 year old discovered a handgun under the mattress and took the gun and accidentally shot the victim.

Allen went into surgery at a local hospital and is now in critical condition. BCSO Investigators are working with the State Attorney's Office to determine if charges are appropriate.
