Bay County, Fla. -

Dr. Hatem Mourad from Coastal Urgent Care and Family Medicine says children are prone to ear infections, especially after a cold.  He says fluid builds up "in the middle part of the ear behind the eardrum."  Dr. Mourad says this "can impair hearing and can sometimes lead to problems with language and speech" if the fluid lingers for weeks to months.

Symptoms of an ear infection in children are:

  • Fever
  • Pulling on the ear
  • More fussy or less active than usual
  • Having no appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Ear pain or temporary hearing loss

Dr. Mourad says to see a doctor or nurse if you think your child has an ear infection.  He or she may prescribe antibiotics to treat it.

Dr. Mourad says there are some things you can do to reduce the number of ear infections if it becomes a frequent problem. Dr. Mourad says your child may be prescribed "an antibiotic every day during certain months of the year, have surgery to place a small tube in the eardrum or get routine vaccines."
