After months of evaluating the possibility of privatizing transportation for Bay District Schools, Superintendent Bill Husfelt will recommend that the board not privatize at this time.
Husfelt says that privatizing transportation at this time would not be in the best interest of Bay District Schools. A total of five transportation companies submitted proposals and a review committee selected the top three for oral presentations.
However the Superintendent believes that privatizing would not solve the aging bus fleet problem, the leave buy-out for current employees would be more costly than the initial savings and that a restructuring of the current transportation operations would be the best option for now.
Husfelt says the district has also been in negotiations with BESPA about changes to contracts which could lead to savings.
The district will still move forward with a bus purchase plan and upgrades include cameras and GPS systems for the buses.
