Florida Highway Patrol Investigating Fatal Accident

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred Wednesday night in Panama City.

Thirty-four-year-old Shantay Beach of Panama City was killed in the accident. Twenty-one year-old Nate Lee Smith Jr. and a juvenile were also injured in the accident.

According to the FHP website, the accident happened at the intersection of 16th Street and Louise Avenue in Panama City. The Panama City Police Department had stopped a vehicle on U.S. 98 for a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled the scene.

The PCPD officer pursued until the vehicle turned westbound on 16th Street and the PCPD pursuit was terminated. The vehicle continued on 16th Street, approaching the intersection of Louise Avenue, where the driver lost control.

The vehicle left the roadway, struck a fire hydrant and an azalea bush at 1607 Louise Avenue before overturning and striking the carport of the house and the carport collapsed on the vehicle.

The FHP has not identified the driver of the vehicle. The investigation is continuing.
