Citizens To Decide If City Can Move Further In Purchasing Electrical Services From Florida Public Utilities Company

Posted: Updated:

The City of Marianna is looking to purchase the electric services of the city's utility company. While they're one step closer to doing so Friday, it's citizen's who will ultimately decide.

The City of Marianna and Florida Public Utilities Company finalized a settlement agreement Friday afternoon.

This settlement agreement comes after multiple legal proceedings between the city and FPU, which  began after the city sued FPU for breaching their contract.

The agreement allows the city to purchase the franchise and buy the electric services, while FPU holds a service contract with the city.

It's an agreement City Manager Jim Dean says is beneficial for both parties.

"The same people that have been taking care of the system for the past you know 20 or so years or more will continue to take care of the system, the outside plant stuff," said Dean. "The city will just take control of the operations and the financial management the rate setting."

While the agreement is finalized, it now needs citizens' approval.

There's a referendum on the April 9th ballot for the city to go forth and purchase the electric services.

Leading up to the April 9th ballot, the city invites residents to 10 meetings where the decision will be discussed.
