Free Diabetes Screening Scheduled for April 5th

Posted: Updated:

The Florida Department of Health in Bay County will offer free diabetes risk screenings on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 10:00 am—2:00pm at over 25 locations across Bay County. The free screenings will be available to anyone 18 years of age and older

This large-scale outreach event is in response to the alarming statistic that approximately 59,000 Bay County residents may be unaware that they are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes.  Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose, or sugar levels, are above normal.  Diabetes has become one of the most common and fastest growing diseases, yet polls have shown that awareness of the disease is surprisingly low.

The Community Health Improvement Plan, completed in 2012 by the Community Health Task Force, identified Diabesity (diabetes and obesity) as one of the major health issues in Bay County.  The Diabesity Action Team developed a plan to  perform diabetes risk screenings throughout our community to bring awareness to our citizens and ultimately prevent and reduce diabetes.  The first screening was held on February 23, 2013, and 279 people were screened for Type 2 diabetes. Forty four people learned they were at risk for prediabetes or diabetes as a result of this screening.

"Our goal is to provide information and tools to help people make informed, healthy choices to improve their health and prevent disease.  The April 5 screening will continue efforts to bring awareness to this health issue," stated Douglas M. Kent, MPH, Administrator, Florida Department of Health in Bay County.

The Florida Department of Health in Bay County and the Bay Area Medical Reserve Corps are excited to offer this free diabetes screening to the community.  Bay County Commissioner Bill Dozier will kick off the event by reading a proclamation on Apr 5 at 10am at the Bay County Government Center on 11th Street.  Other screening locations are:
