A would-be armed robber got more than he bargained for Saturday night when he was shot by an off duty Panama City Beach police officer he allegedly tried to rob.
According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, the officer had been emailing and talking with a man who wanted to sell a laptop computer on Craigslist. The officer suspected the computer had been stolen during a recent break-in at his girlfriend's house, said Major Tommy Ford of the BCSO.
Ford said the officer suggested a meeting at the Callaway Walmart but the seller instead set up a meeting at the Callaway Chase Apartments on State Highway 22. The officer told investigators he "did not feel right" about getting out of his car when he arrived at the property. That's when a black male armed with a handgun approached his vehicle and demanded money, the BCSO said.
The BCSO said the officer fired several shots at the would-be robber, who then fled the scene. The officer called 911 at 9:45 p.m., the BCSO said.
Major Ford said the BCSO received a call about an hour later from a local hospital reporting that a man was seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to his legs.
Officers went to the hospital and questioned the gunshot victim, Antwan Boulware, about the incident. Boulware was arrested on a charge of attempted armed robbery.
