The city of Panama City is on the cusp of a $13 million project to revitalize the city's marina. One of the biggest pieces of the pie a controversial lighthouse that will be constructed on property. At Tuesday nights commission meeting, a big check was presented to help this cause.
The director of the Community Redevelopment Agency says now there is fifty thousand reasons to believe in the lighthouse project.
A check was presented from The Panama City Lighthouse Project, Inc. towards the construction of the lighthouse project to the city of Panama City totaling that exact amount.
Mrs. Pat Sabiston was there at the commission to do the honors. The marina project consists of a civic plaza and restructuring the sea wall and bulkhead of the marina.
Whitson says this project will be an integral part of the marinas success.
"It says we believe in this project and we believe in the future of downtown," said Whitson. "Our community is not going to stop until we are on top and this lighthouse is going to be a marquee.
"It's going to be a word class symbol of our progress and our pride and our maritime history."
The marina project had its groundbreaking late last month and city officials tell me the construction on the lighthouse may start as early as September.
