The Gulf Coast Triathlon is only a few short weeks away and race organizers are already thinking of ways to make participants feel at ease.
The race draws on average of 1300 to 1500 athletes per year and provides a boost in area economy.
Gulf Coast Triathlon board member Steve Moss says while the race does provide Panama City Beach Police and Sheriff's Deputies to monitor traffic condition and athlete safety, this year their role may change.
"Now, I think their presence takes on an added level, because not only are they going to be there to protect the athletes from cars but from folks who might want to do them harm," said Moss. "So, I think the security will take on a little bit of an added dimension this year for sure versus other years."
According to Moss there has been no cancellations so far following Boston's attack.
