Friday night while a keeper was doing her evening rounds at the barn, she heard a loud noise and saw Elliot fall down and then make his way to the outside paddock. She immediately called for assistance. The staff was able to get him to his feet and back inside the barn, where he collapsed again. The veterinarian diagnosed a spinal cord injury and immediately started treatment.
Throughout the night the staff stayed with Elliot keeping him comfortable to give him time for the medicines to work. In addition, the giraffe's breeder at a ZAA zoo and a veterinarian from an AZA zoo who have extensive experience with this type of injury in giraffes were also consulted and concurred with our treatment plan.
Though giraffes are large animals, they are fragile by nature. After exhausting all the veterinary medical resources and further consultations, we were obligated to relieve Elliot of his suffering peacefully. ZooWorld would like to thank the community for their love and generous support. Elliot is now resting quietly and peacefully.
The above was released Monday by ZooWorld.
