Since Hurricane Katrina rocked the New Orleans area in 2005 trains have been absent from the Gulf Coast.
At Tuesday night's commission meeting Commissioner Billy Rader of Ward 4 expressed his support for a movement calling for the return of the passenger railway between Jacksonville and New Orleans.
Commissioner Rader says infrastructure has been restored since the storm and bridges rebuilt.
Rader drafted a letter on behalf of the city expressing its support and requesting the restoration of a passenger rail service along the Gulf Coast.
"There's a strong movement to get it in front of the Senate very, very quickly," said Rader. "That's why I drafted this letter last week and I was not going to mail it until the city commission looked at it first."
Commissioner Rader says the letter will be sent to Mobile, Alabama to Mayor Samuel Jones who is at the forefront of the movement.
