The Mexico Beach City Council is a few steps closer to hiring a new city clerk. The position has been a controversial topic since the former city clerk resigned in Mid-March.
The city council reviewed more than a dozen applications earlier this month but didn't make any decisions.
However, on Monday night, they discussed applications and agreed on a salary range.
The city would pay between about $41,000 and $56,000 a year based on the new hire's qualifications.
The council also discussed the type role the new city clerk would play. Councilwoman Tanya Castro says she's looking for someone with a strong financial background.
"I would like to see a CPA doing it. I know cities are moving towards that. This gives us an opportunity to do that. Why we wouldn't even consider it or look at it, I don't know why we wouldn't. I think we should," said Castro.
The council did narrow the applicants down to six. Interviews could be scheduled in the coming weeks.
